It's Like Picking Ripe Peaches
They Just Fall into Your Hands at the Slightest Touch
Men and women behind bars of all ages, races and experience respond readily to God's truth. They are hungry ... and just waiting for you to come share the Word and to pray with them!
When I first began going into Larimer County Jail some years ago, it was
only after a great deal of ‘friendly persuasion’ by a dear Hispanic friend. My friend Tim had himself been behind bars much of his life, and at age 47 appeared much older than my 62 years. (He died just four years later.)
Drugs and a criminal life style had destroyed him physically, emotionally and spiritually. But he found the Lord, and was re-born into a life of serving those behind bar - in jails and prisons. When he befriended me, an idea hatched. (Don’t take offense, these are his words.) "Why don’t I take this guy in with me. He is the whitest whitey I’ve ever known. He came from a long-time Christian family; his idea of dope is something to glue model airplanes with; he considers ‘darn’ a cuss word; he’s never been behind bars, and God has prospered him in health, joy and an interesting life."
Tim’s notion was that he would show young men the consequences of his lifestyle; versus life as it should be. ("Yeah, right," I responded! "Some model Saint I am! What could an old geezer like me tell those young gangbangers, most of them of Spanish or African origins - the products of slums, drug dens and criminal parents?") But Tim persisted. I was subsequently entrapped, enraptured, and enchanted, and found a new, deeper love of my Maker in the process.
Jail and Prison ministry is like picking ripe peaches in a Colorado fruit orchard. Just touch them, and they fall into your hands. Never have I experienced so much hunger, thirst and passion for the things of God. There is no arrogance. They are not full of themselves. They are already broken (God can’t build up someone who isn’t willing to first be broken). The harvest is great, and greatly satisfying.
